You Might Ask… Why Were You Selected?

There are several factors could trigger an “SSSS” designation:

  • Random selection – Sometimes, it’s just the luck of the draw.
  • One-way or last-minute bookings – These can appear suspicious to security systems.
  • Traveling to high-risk or flagged destinations – Certain locations may increase the likelihood of extra screening.
  • Inconsistencies in travel history – A sudden change in travel patterns might trigger closer scrutiny.
  • Name similarities – If your name closely matches someone on a watchlist, you might get flagged. Let’s hope this is never the case for you!
  • Previous security incidents – If you’ve had issues at customs or security in the past, this could put you on a watchlist for future flights.

How Do You Know If You’ve Been Selected?

There are a few clear indicators that you’ve been chosen for additional screening:

  • “SSSS” printed on your boarding pass – This is the most obvious sign.
  • Inability to check in online – If you’re forced to check in at the counter, this could be the reason why.
  • Issues printing a boarding pass at the airport kiosk – You may need to visit an agent instead.
  • Security officers pulling you aside at screening – Even if you didn’t see “SSSS” beforehand, security will notify you during the process.

What Happens During Secondary Screening?

If selected, be prepared for extra security measures:

  • More extensive pat-downs – A TSA agent will conduct a detailed physical check.
  • Thorough bag inspections – Your carry-on and personal items will be closely examined.
  • Explosive residue testing – Agents may swab your hands and belongings.
  • Additional questioning – You might be asked about your trip, purpose of travel, and luggage contents.

This screening can take 15 to 45 minutes, so plan accordingly by arriving at the airport early. You just never know.

Can You Avoid Getting “SSSS” On Boarding Pass in the Future?

If you’ve received this designation multiple times, here are a few ways to reduce the chances of it happening again:

  • Apply for a Redress Number – If you believe you’re being repeatedly flagged unfairly, you can apply through the Department of Homeland Security’s Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP). If approved, you’ll receive a Redress Control Number to use when booking flights, which may prevent future extra screenings.
  • Use TSA PreCheck or Global Entry—While this doesn’t guarantee you won’t get “SSSS,” it can speed up the overall screening process if you’re a trusted traveler. We have used this since its beginning, and, in our opinion, it’s worth having. Some credit cards and travel loyalty programs offer it for free with reimbursement when you charge the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry to the card.

Global Entry Personal Note

Make sure you enter your TSA or Global Entry information when you purchase your tickets. On a recent trip, I thought I had filled out both Gary and my information and yet when checking in at the much shorter line of TSA, I had to leave the line as somehow I neglected to put my Known Traveler Number (KTN) when booking our airline travel reservations. You must have done this to appear on your boarding pass.

“SSSS” on Boarding Pass Final Thoughts

Have you ever been flagged with this code? We’d love to hear your story.

While getting “SSSS” on your boarding pass can be frustrating, it’s not a cause for panic. It’s just an added layer of security, and with some preparation, you can move through the process with minimal stress. As always… happy and safe travels!
