The event’s highlight is the parade of whimsical and thought-provoking colossal papier-mâché floats. I recall in 2022, there was a float geared towards what was happening in the United States. It was of President Biden and Trump, along with Vladimir Putin. Perhaps not everyone in the crowd got its meaning… but Gary and I sure did. Crafted by master artisans, some of whom have honed their skills for generations, these towering creations can reach up to 20 meters in height and are accompanied by music, dancing, and an electrifying atmosphere.

Tickets for Carnivale in Viareggio

Having been to this event several times, I recommend purchasing your tickets beforehand. We went one year with a friend, and when we arrived, the event was already sold out. There wasn’t even a place to stand and enjoy the event from afar.

You can purchase seats in the grandstand at a slightly higher price than standing in the street. On our last visit, we chose to sit in the grandstand because some of our friends had health issues. The previous year, Gary and I stood on the street level instead. The event is entirely different when you stand and have the enormous floats glide over your head. The dancers, all dressed in costumes, also come right up to you; it is our favorite way to enjoy the event. A few times, I was so involved in taking videos that Gary had to pull me back as I was in the path of an oncoming dancing group and float.

While Viareggio and Venice host world-famous Carnivale celebrations, their atmospheres and traditions are distinct.
