Street Art

Street Art in Florence is an amazing display of talent. Renowned for its iconic Renaissance masterpieces, Florence has long been a beacon of artistic expression. While the works of Michelangelo and Botticelli continue to captivate visitors, the city’s artistic spirit is far from confined to its historic galleries. In recent years, Florence has witnessed a vibrant resurgence of creativity, with its streets becoming a canvas for a new generation of artists.

Beyond the grandeur of the Uffizi and the Accademia, Florence offers a contemporary art scene that is equally compelling. From bold murals to intricate stencils, street art has transformed the city’s urban landscape, adding a layer of color and vitality. As you wander through Florence’s historic center, keep your eyes peeled for the unexpected: you might discover a thought-provoking message hidden in plain sight or a stunning piece of artwork that challenges your perceptions.

Wander Through the City

One of my favorite areas in Florence is Via Calzaiuoli, the main street close to the Mercato del Porcellino (the Bronze Pig) and the clothing store Zara. Here, along the street, artists draw with chalk on the streets. These artists spend hours leaning over, on their hands and knees, only to receive a few euros for their efforts. While they are there almost every day, it is sad to think that what they create during the day disappears at night when the street cleaners come through.

Stop and Take in the Beauty

In addition, some art is found on the rolling metal doors. It’s a shame that when these doors are open, you don’t get to enjoy the beauty. It’s the same in Lucca with the painted Puccini doors you find along San Paliono in the historic center.

Have you ever noticed Florence’s street signs decorated with a bit of whimsy? Perhaps the fish swimming in a bowl or David, who carries the white bar of the “No through traffic” sign. These are the creations of the famous street artist Clet Abraham—probably the most famous active artist in the city today. Florence is abundant with road and traffic signs that he has transformed. His subjects vary from religion to themes connected with work ethics. And some of them are just plain fun. It’s fun to take photos… I have quite a collection.

The Statues

Finally, there is the kind of art you see along with the Uffizi Gallery. These are usually where you will find the “statues.” Dressed in everything from a Roman guard, Dante, to this cute Cupid who we happened to pass on Valentine’s Day. He was there for about two weeks; winking at the people who passed by. He was quite cute and comical. I consider that street art too! Gary enjoyed giving him a few coins.

In Conclusion

We only included some of the fantastic street art you can find in Florence. Perhaps when we update this post again, we’ll include some photos of the street art displayed on electrical boxes and such. Remember the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder?”
