A Bit of History of Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni was built in the early 13th century by the Republic of Siena as a defensive fortress against Florence. Its perfectly circular walls and fourteen imposing towers made it a formidable stronghold designed to keep invaders at bay. Even today, the walls remain intact, giving you a rare glimpse into medieval military architecture. Fun fact: Dante even referenced Monteriggioni’s walls in Inferno, comparing them to a ring of giants encircling the abyss!

What to See and Do

  • Walk the Walls One of the absolute must-dos in Monteriggioni is walking along a section of its ancient walls (see above). Two sections are open to visitors and offer panoramic views over the rolling Tuscan countryside. The sight of the Chianti vineyards and olive groves stretching to the horizon is worth the small entrance fee.
  • Piazza Roma The heart of the village, Piazza Roma, is a charming little square surrounded by stone buildings, cafés, and a beautiful Romanesque church, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (pictured above). It’s the perfect place to soak up the medieval atmosphere.
  • The Armory Museum This small but fun museum inside the town offers hands-on experiences with medieval weaponry and armor. You can even try on a helmet and chainmail—kids (and kids at heart) will love it.
  • Festivals and Events If visiting in July, don’t miss the Monteriggioni Medieval Festival. The town transforms into a living history experience, with costumed performers, jousting tournaments, traditional crafts, and medieval feasts.

Food to Try in Monteriggioni

You can’t visit Monteriggioni without indulging in some delicious Tuscan cuisine. Here are a few specialties to look for:

  • Pici Pasta – This thick, hand-rolled pasta is a Tuscan staple, often served with a rich meat sauce or cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper).
  • Ribollita – A hearty bread and vegetable soup, perfect for visiting in cooler months.
  • Cantucci and Vin Santo – End your meal the Tuscan way with these crunchy almond cookies dipped in a sweet dessert wine.

Local restaurants take pride in serving authentic dishes made with fresh, regional ingredients. Sit down at a trattoria, order a glass of Chianti, and soak in the history around you.

A Hidden Gem

Just outside the main walls, take a short walk to discover Monteriggioni’s quieter side. A lovely path leads through olive groves and vineyards, giving you a more intimate view of the Tuscan countryside. It’s an exceptionally peaceful spot in the early morning or just before sunset.

Gary and I have been to this town several times. It never disappoints. And you’d think because its so small, we have seen everything but that’s not true. Everytime we visit, we try a new restaurant and step into shops with new items to discover and appreciate. We’ve written about and included it in our Tuscany Treasures guidebook – page 135.

Final Thoughts

Monteriggioni may be small, but it delivers an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re fascinated by history, looking for a scenic spot to wander, or want to enjoy a slow afternoon with great food and wine, this medieval gem is worth the visit. Even if you’ve been before, there’s always another hidden corner or breathtaking view to enjoy. So, when are you planning your next trip?

  1. We attended the Monteriggioni Medieval Festival one year and stayed overnight in a hotel within the city walls. Magical! This festival is really a step above many other medieval festivals in Tuscany…
