The Basilica of San Petronio is extremely large in size. It is the largest Gothic church built in bricks in the world. It is the tenth-largest church in the world by volume, about 433 feet long by 216 feet wide. The vault reaches about 147 feet inside and it is about 168 feet in the facade. Needless to say, you feel very small standing inside.
The unique facade has a lower part made of marble. Inside there are 22 chapels dedicated to the most important bolognese families that contributed to its building.
What is amazing and noteworthy is the stained glass windows that are in this basilica. Not only are the stained glass windows amazing; but to see them along with frescoes is breathtaking.
Also inside the Basilica is the biggest sundial in the world and created by an astronomer, Gian Domenico Cassini. To see pictures and read more about the sundial, see our separate post, “Biggest Sundial in the World” http://ouritalianjourney.com/biggest-sundial-in-world-bologna/
