Amazing Doors in Bologna

My obsession with the amazing wood doors in Italy continues in Bologna. I must stay they were different here. Different in a bad way. LOTS of graffiti in Bologna. Nothing is off-limits; the beautiful historic buildings, statues, all through the amazing and beautiful porticoes and of course, doors.

I’m not sure why homeowners leave it. Maybe because they can’t keep up with it always being tagged. I do find it odd because store owners are constantly cleaning the front of their stores, mind you it is dirt they are cleaning and not graffiti but still. They really are obsessed with the cleanliness of the front windows, the entry rugs, the cobblestones in front – everything but the graffiti.

Hello from Bologna! The graffiti is actually quite hard to clean. Firstly, because it doesn’t come off easily and there are a lot of graffiti “artists ” waiting to repaint it. Secondly, there are a lot of rules regarding painting and restoring historical buildings so ironically, you are not allowed to just grab a can of paint and cover it up! There are a lot of volunteer groups now who are working to improve the city (I belong to one of them) but it takes time. We also need to get people to start respecting the buildings and stop vandalizing them but that is easier said than done.

Cath, I am so happy to hear about the volunteers. Bologna is not by any means the only city with graffiti. I hope I didn’t imply that. Thank you for your comment as I wasn’t aware of the rules regarding historical buildings. I completely agree about the respect and even find that here in the US.
